Island Tribe sunscreens are designed to give the user maximum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, more than this, the specific formula will stay on your skin for the duration of your activity. Many brands claim to have water resistant sunscreens but they actually contain water and we have learnt that this does not provide a long lasting water-specific sunscreen, all our gel based products do not contain water . Furthermore we don’t believe in polluting the ocean with water based sunscreen – in addition our product does not contain Oxybenzone, found in lots of other sunscreens, which has been found to be harmful to marine life. As the product does not contain water, it is also attractive to winter sports enthusiasts as it will not freeze in low temperatures like water based sunscreens. The products are non irritant and have been dermatologically tested. Our product is also sweat resistant which is particularly beneficial for sports enthusiasts. Our products are recognised by CANSA as protection against the harmful effects of the sun.
The Island Tribe brand was launched in 1992 with the aim of providing a waterproof sun protection to surfers and other watersports enthusiasts. The range consisted of one product only, the Island Tribe Clear Gel, which to this day has been unrivaled by competition for water resistance. The brand is now distributed in 25 countries worldwide. Action Sports Distribution Ltd are the exclusive distributor of Island Tribe products for the UK. Action Sports Distribution distribute watersports products and support a team of brand ambassadors.
Useful sunscreen information:-
SPF – Sun Protection Factor. The SPF offered by our products varies between the product itself. The SPF number represents how many more times your skin will be able to stand the sun before it burns. If you know you could be in the sun without any sunscreen for 10 minutes before burning, and you wore a SPF15 you could in theory now be in the sun for 150 minutes safely. It is crucial to reapply your sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming or towelling off. The SPF provides protection against UVB rays only.
What are UVB rays? UVB light is the medium wave emitted by the sun that penetrates the superficial skin layers. UVB causes delayed tanning, burning, and has also been linked to skin cancer. The higher the SPF offered by the sunscreen the more protection you have from UVB rays.
What are UVA rays? UVA light is also known as long wave light and accounts for a much larger proportion of the UV light which reaches our skin. Our product contains a ‘UVA logo’ label, which is a European standard confirming that the product offers UVA protection.
